October 11, 2011, Water Treatment Plant Contracting opportunities: Regional contractors will have the opportunity to competitively bid for work on the Southern Delivery System (SDS) Water Treatment Plant — the largest and most complex component of the regional project. More than $100 million in construction work is anticipated to complete the new water treatment plant, located in southeast Colorado Springs (east of Marksheffel Road and south of Highway 24). The design-build team of McCarthy Building Companies Inc. and Carollo Engineering will divide the facility's plans into various construction bid packages as the team finalizes its design.

Sept. 29, 2011, Volunteers Create Wetland on Fountain Creek: Fountain Creek got a little bit greener thanks to 65 volunteers from southern Colorado who planted more than 4,500 plants, shrubs and trees to establish a new wetland. The new wetland, located on Clear Spring Ranch south of the city of Fountain, is part of a comprehensive mitigation plan for the Southern Delivery System project developed by Colorado Springs Utilities to address SDS construction impacts. Once established, the wetland will help restore and stabilize the banks of Fountain Creek – providing additional habitat for wildlife and improving water quality by reducing erosion along the stream bed.

Sept. 22, 2011, Local Businesses Benefitting from SDS: With major construction on the Southern Delivery System (SDS) well underway, southern Colorado businesses are benefitting from opportunities to contract and subcontract for work on the project. Regional companies have been hired by SDS prime contractors for a wide variety of needs including electrical work, asphalt, engineering, fabrication of materials, land acquisition support, mechanical work, concrete, fiberoptics, construction and environmental services. In fact, many local and regional businesses have already secured tens of millions of dollars in work on SDS.

April 1, 2011 - SDS Important to Regional Economy: A recently released independent economic development study revealed that the Southern Delivery System (SDS) will have a very important economic impact, helping to drive the local and regional economy over many years by contributing to the creation of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in earnings for the population. Now under construction, SDS will provide water to Colorado Springs, Security, Fountain and Pueblo West through 2046 and beyond. The study Economic Impacts of the Southern Delivery System on the Regional Economy of Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Surrounding Areaswas commissioned by the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce Center for Regional Advancement and performed by Summit Economics LLC. March 2011

March 23, 2011 - SDS is Putting Areas Businesses to Work: With the construction of the Southern Delivery System (SDS) underway, some $56 million in engineering and construction contracts have been awarded to date. The work necessary to build the $880 million regional water project is providing area contractors, subcontractors and suppliers business at a time when little else is available. “The interest level in contracting work for the Southern Delivery System so far has been very high, and there still are significant portions of the project to be contracted out,” said Eli Novakovich, Colorado Springs Utilities’ manager of Procurement and Contract Services. “We are one of the few businesses in town outsourcing work to area contractors right now.” (News Release)
